Rubio Rejects Blame for Foreign Aid Cuts
Secretary of State Marco Rubio forcefully rebuffed ABC News host George Stephanopoulos on Tuesday, dismantling the claim that President Trump’s foreign aid cuts led to global deaths.
During a heated exchange on Good Morning America, Stephanopoulos pressed Rubio, who until early September led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), about the February aid freeze, alleging it caused widespread harm by halting humanitarian funding. Rubio dismissed the narrative as “ridiculous,” arguing that the U.S. cannot be solely accountable for global tragedies.
“Well first of all, then they died because England didn’t give enough money, or Canada didn’t give more or China did,” Rubio shot back, pointing out China’s minimal aid contributions despite its economic might.
“What about China? I mean, China’s the second largest economy in the world, they don’t give money … so did people die because China didn’t give more money?”
Exposing Flaws in Aid Distribution
Stephanopoulos suggested Rubio was dodging the impact of the cuts, but the secretary of state clarified that aid failures often stem from external factors like wars and conflicts, not U.S. policy.
“I think anybody who tells you that somehow it’s the United States, that somehow if we cut a dollar, we’re responsible for some horrific thing that’s going on in the world. It’s just not true,” Rubio stated.
He emphasized that in many cited cases, “the reason why the aid didn’t get to there … is because there’s a war going on and the aid never got to the people.”
Rubio made sure to note that the U.S. remains the world’s leading provider of foreign aid but insisted the Trump administration is committed to rooting out waste.
“No one has died because the United States has cut aid, no,” he declared, attributing deaths to “gangs steal[ing] the aid” and other nations’ failure to contribute.
Curbing Wasteful Spending Abroad
The controversy stems from DOGE’s decision to shutter the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in February, citing its bloated spending on questionable programs, including $17 billion to Ukraine in 2023 and millions on initiatives like 65 million condoms and a $2 million grant for s-x change procedures in Guatemala.
Rubio defended the move, vowing that the U.S. will continue to lead in global aid but not by “pour[ing] billions of dollars out the door of American taxpayer funds for programs that don’t work, and in some cases that were flat-out corrupt.”
The administration’s focus, he argued, is on responsible aid that delivers results, not perpetuating inefficient or ideologically driven projects.
