Border Czar-Designate Tom Homan Accuses Biden Administration of “Sabotaging” U.S. Border Policy

Tom Homan, the former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the incoming Trump administration’s border czar-designate, has made bold claims regarding the current administration’s handling of immigration and border security. In an appearance on Fox News’ Hannity on Monday, Homan accused members of the Biden administration of deliberately keeping the U.S. southern border open, pursuing a strategy that he believes serves their political interests.

According to Homan, the Biden administration’s approach to immigration is not a result of mismanagement but rather a deliberate strategy to maintain a continuous flow of migrants into the United States. He claimed that the administration intends to keep the border open until the very last day of its tenure. Homan, who has been a vocal critic of the administration’s immigration policies, stated that this ongoing strategy involves substantial support to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that handle various aspects of migrant processing.

“It’s sabotage like I’ve been saying for four years. They’re open border. It isn’t mismanagement. It is incompetence. This is by design, and they want that border to remain open to the last day they’re in office,” Homan told Hannity. “You know if you look at what they’re doing, they’re signing contracts to this day. Signing contracts with NGOs to keep the money flowing.”

The charges leveled by Homan align with the Republican Party’s valid criticism of the Biden administration’s border policies. Republicans, led by President Donald Trump, have been quick to accuse the current administration of being soft on immigration and failing to protect national security. For Homan, this criticism is rooted in a belief that the administration is intentionally undermining border security in favor of political objectives.

Homan also pointed to specific decisions by the Biden administration that he claims further exacerbate the problem. One such decision was the administration’s choice to sell off parts of the border wall, a symbolic move that Homan believes sends the wrong message about the country’s commitment to securing its borders.

“They’re trying to sell parts of the border wall even after what happens in New Orleans, in Las Vegas. They’re still releasing thousands a day into this country through the CBP One app to the CHNV program. The board chose to release some people across the board even [after] what happened,” Homan said, referencing recent events in cities like New Orleans and Las Vegas that have brought national attention to the ongoing border crisis.

Moreover, Homan raised concerns about the national security risks associated with the current border policies. He noted that the southern border has become a major vulnerability for the United States, with increasing numbers of unauthorized immigrants entering the country. Homan’s remarks echoed the views of Christopher Wray, the Director of the FBI, who has previously identified the border as a significant national security threat.

“The only thing me and Christopher Ray agree on is the southern border is the biggest national security vulnerability this country’s ever seen, and this administration continues today and tomorrow up to January 20 to release thousands of unvetted people into this nation,” Homan warned.

The concerns raised by Homan are rooted in the reality and context of record-breaking border encounters. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the agency has reported more than 7.4 million encounters with unauthorized immigrants since the start of the 2021 fiscal year. Under President Joe Biden’s leadership, the United States has experienced an unprecedented level of net migration, with approximately 2.4 million individuals entering the country annually. This marks the largest wave of immigration in U.S. history, further intensifying debates about the country’s immigration policies and the handling of the southern border.

Homan’s comments give voice to the growing concerns among those who believe that border security should be a top priority for the nation’s leadership, and his accusations against the Biden administration provide a glimpse into the ongoing political battle over immigration in the United States. The Donald Trump administration coming into power just days from now are adamant that illegal immigration will be a number one issue no matter what.

Americans Want Less Immigration, Period

The evidence that illegal immigration was the leading cause of Donald Trump’s resounding win in November of 2024 lies in the public sentiment the American people have regarding immigration right now. The issue was a major part of Donald Trump’s win in 2016, and that year about 38% of Americans said that they wanted immigration levels to decrease. That was equal to the 38% that year that said that it should stay at it’s existing levels.

In 2024, that number changed entirely. According to Gallup, upwards of 55% of Americans say they want overall immigration levels to decrease. Just 16% of Americans shared in the Gallup survey that they wanted immigration levels to increase. This is the highest level of discontent for immigration levels since 2001.

Simply put, the political atmosphere was perfect for Donald Trump. Now, it’s up to him to live up to his promises. He has to deliver on decreasing illegal immigration and doing so dramatically. Furthermore, a ton of Americans are indicating they think that even legal immigration could take a period of cooling off to allow for native-born Americans to earn their keep in the American economy rather than corporations abusing immigration for cheap labor.
