Democrats Grapple with Leadership Vacuum
CNN senior political data reporter Harry Enten highlighted the Democratic Party’s struggle to identify a new leader, describing it as “historically divided” and “messier than a hoarder’s basement.”
Speaking on CNN News Central with host Kate Bolduan, Enten reacted to former Vice President Kamala Harris’s recent interview with Stephen Colbert, where she discussed not running for California governor but left open the possibility of a 2028 presidential bid.
Enten noted, “The water is quite warm. If you’re a Democrat potentially thinking about running in 2028, jump right in, because at this point there is no frontrunner.”
He attributed the lack of a clear leader to the party’s low favorability, citing polls showing record lows: Wall Street Journal (30 points underwater), CNN (26 points underwater), and Gallup (26 points underwater), driven largely by discontent within the Democratic base seeking a new direction.
Polls Reveal Deep Party Dissatisfaction
Recent surveys point to the Democratic Party’s challenges following President Donald Trump’s November 2024 victory. An Associated Press-NORC poll found only 23% of Democrats associated positive attributes with their party, compared to 41% of Republicans who viewed their party favorably, though 19% of Republicans called it “greedy.”
Among the broader public, 40% used negative terms like “dishonest” or “stupid” for both parties, with some expressing interest in a third party, such as Elon Musk’s slow-to-launch “America Party.”
Over one-third of Democrats labeled their party “weak” and “ineffective,” reflecting frustration with its response to Trump’s policies. Cathia Krehbiel, a 48-year-old Democrat from Iowa, called the party “spineless,” criticizing its “scattershot” leadership.
A CNN/SSRS poll indicated 72% of Democrats are “extremely motivated” for the 2025 midterms, signaling a desire for change amid Trump’s reported 40% approval rating, the lowest since his January 2025 return.
Contrasting Views on Party Directions
Republicans expressed more optimism, with supporters like Samuel Washington, 65, from Chicago, praising the GOP as “hardworking” and “patriotic,” while attributing national struggles to “12 years of misuse and misguided leadership from the Democratic Party.”
Conversely, independents like Jim Williams, a 78-year-old retiree from Michigan, voiced disappointment with both parties but reserved harsher criticism for the GOP under Trump, citing a lack of “morals” and “ethics.”
Democrats like Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.) and others warned of economic fallout from Trump’s tariffs, while Republicans like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) lauded them as “big wins for America.”
The Democratic Party’s internal divisions and lack of a unifying figure contrast with the GOP’s cohesion, setting the stage for intense political battles in upcoming elections in New Jersey, Virginia, and the 2026 midterms.
