Senate Republican Demands Probe into O’Rourke and Soros-Linked Groups
Texas Senator John Cornyn, a Republican, is urging Attorney General Pam Bondi to launch a federal investigation into organizations connected to Beto O’Rourke and the influential billionaire George Soros, accusing them of potentially violating laws by financing the flight of Texas Democrats during a critical redistricting session.
This push adds validity to the concerns over how such deep-pocketed donors, particularly Soros with his history of funding progressive causes, might be exerting outsized sway on state politics.
In a letter obtained by Fox News Digital, Cornyn pressed for scrutiny of O’Rourke’s Powered by People PAC and the Soros-affiliated Texas Majority PAC, questioning if their support for the lawmakers’ exodus breached federal corruption and election statutes. “I write today to encourage an investigation of the entities funding this charade,” Cornyn wrote. “News reports make clear that PACs tied to Beto O’Rourke and megadonors such as George Soros are supporting the legislators, along with other campaign entities.”
Cornyn had earlier appealed to FBI Director Kash Patel to locate the absent Democrats. His latest demand follows revelations from the Texas Tribune that O’Rourke’s group has been instrumental in covering costs like flights, hotels, and even the $500 daily fines for the approximately 50 Democrats who relocated to New York and Illinois.
The Soros-backed PAC is also said to be coordinating with national donors to bolster these efforts, raising alarms about external interference in Texas affairs.
Democrats’ Flight Disrupts Redistricting Amid Funding Controversy
The Democrats’ departure was a calculated move to derail a special session convened by Governor Greg Abbott for redrawing electoral maps, denying the quorum needed for legislative progress. Despite this tactic, the Texas Senate pushed forward with the new maps on Tuesday evening, and the fugitive House members are now expected to return.
The House still needs to approve the changes for them to take effect, with the session wrapping up next Tuesday—though Abbott has vowed to reconvene if necessary to counter the opposition.
Cornyn’s letter points to how the lawmakers’ actions, allegedly fueled by these PACs, not only stalled redistricting but also delayed vital aid for flood victims in Texas. “The special session will end in a matter of days, at which point, assistance to flood victims and other needed measures will go unaddressed,” Cornyn said.
“The absconding House members’ dereliction of duty is truly shameful.”
Fox News Digital sought responses from both O’Rourke’s and the Soros-linked organizations, but none were provided.
Legal Ramifications and Broader Implications of Alleged Violations
Cornyn outlined potential crimes, suggesting that accepting funds or perks in exchange for sabotaging the quorum could constitute honest services fraud or Hobbs Act extortion. Crossing state lines with intent to violate laws might invoke the federal Travel Act, he argued, while state bribery rules could apply to both the legislators and the Soros-tied funders providing what he called “corrupt funds.”
He further flagged possible breaches of federal campaign finance laws by O’Rourke’s PAC, such as using money for personal expenses like non-campaign travel and lodging.
“I therefore request that you also work with the [Federal Election Commission] to examine both the sources of funding for the special interest groups and PACs funding the House members’ dereliction of duty and how those funds have been spent to ensure compliance with all federal laws and regulations,” he wrote.
