But now Rachel Maddow may lose her job after being hit with a devastating wake up call.
Theodis Daniel, father of 13-year-old cancer warrior Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel — who was recently honored as a U.S. Secret Service agent during President Trump’s congressional address — has zero tolerance for Rachel Maddow raining on his son’s parade.
“She needs to shut her mouth if she has nothing nice to say,” Theodis fired off to the New York Post, targeting the MSNBC host who slammed Trump as “disgusting” for spotlighting DJ and his fight against cancer.
“This lady didn’t even serve time in the military,” he jabbed. “I was on the USS Kitty Hawk. She does not need to put her bad energy on us.”
DJ, a young Texan with a lion’s heart, won over the nation when Secret Service Director Sean Curran named him an honorary agent, a moment that lit up the room and beyond.
“The White House reached out to us and said that President Trump wants to meet Devarjaye,” Theodis shared with The Post. “They flew us out and FBI agents picked us up at the airport.”
After taking his oath and meeting border czar Tom Homan, DJ and Theodis were ushered to VIP seats for Trump’s speech.
“We sat next to Mr. Elon [Musk], the first lady was in front of us and [FBI Director] Kash Patel was at my son’s right shoulder,” recounted Theodis, a 47-year-old Navy vet who once worked as a machinist’s mate and fireman. “The first lady was nice, sweet, down to earth. Mr. Elon shook hands with us.”
DJ’s big moment — highlighted by Trump calling him “a young man who truly loves our police” — caught his loved ones off guard but didn’t surprise them. Theodis noted this Secret Service gig was DJ’s 909th honorary law enforcement induction.
“I thought it was awesome for my nephew. He deserves it,” DJ’s aunt Jane Daniel told The Post about Trump’s shoutout. “I think that such an honor will help him to reach his goals. If you can accomplish this, you can accomplish anything.”
DJ’s world flipped in September 2018 when, at just 6 years old, he was hit with a Stage 3 brain cancer diagnosis. His family had freshly relocated from San Antonio to Houston, gearing up for a new school year.
“His body stiffened and suddenly he was foaming at the mouth,” his mom, Demitra Johnson, recalled to The Post. “We rushed him to the hospital.”
A CAT scan uncovered a lemon-sized tumor, as Theodis put it, rocking their lives.
“I was crying; I remember yelling at his dad to do something,” said Demitra, a restaurant manager now separated from Theodis. “I thought he could fix it.”
Doctors gave DJ five months tops. Over six years later, he’s still battling terminal cancer with ongoing treatment.
Each operation tweaks DJ’s spirit a bit, but Demitra sees the silver lining: “I feel like he’s been born 13 times. He’s so strong and has a heart of gold.”
Before cancer struck, DJ — moved by Houston PD’s Hurricane Harvey heroics — dreamed of becoming a cop. Theodis didn’t let that dream sit on ice, setting up DJ’s first honorary swearing-in with Brookshire, Texas, police in 2019. The 6-year-old rocked a uniform and a 10-gallon hat.
“Two years later I called the Texas state troopers to see if they would come out for Devarjaye’s ninth birthday and we had a swarm of police officers,” Theodis said. “The officers swore him in and it grew from there. Suddenly everyone wanted to have him in.”
Trump upped the ante Tuesday, declaring, “We’re going to do you the biggest honor of them all. I am asking our new Secret Service director, Sean Curran, to officially make you an agent of the United States.”
“He takes a lot of pride in being made a police officer,” Theodis beamed. “The other officers bring him camaraderie and confidence.”
But Theodis wasn’t here for the Democratic lawmakers jeering Trump’s speech. “When [Rep.] Al Green [D-Texas] stood up and made that ruckus, I was disgusted,” he said. “What kind of message is he sending?”
Still, DJ’s crew refuses to let negativity dim their shine.
“Devarjaye has overcome the odds,” Jane marveled. “It’s all in who you are inside. I think God has given a tough battle to a good one. I believe that God is looking out for him and making sure that the right hands are touching him.”
