And the House blocked a Leftist voting scheme that would have altered the future of politics.
In a decisive move toward reinforcing election integrity, the GOP-led House passed a bill on Thursday to prevent noncitizens from voting in local elections in Washington, D.C.
The legislation, H.R. 192, garnered bipartisan support, reflecting a broad consensus on the need to safeguard the sanctity of the voting process.
The final tally saw 52 Democrats joining 210 Republicans in favor of the bill, while 143 Democrats opposed it.
Notably, no GOP lawmakers voted against the measure. Additionally, 25 members, including seven Republicans and 18 Democrats, abstained from voting.
The bill explicitly prohibits noncitizens from voting in any election for public office or in any ballot initiative or referendum within the District of Columbia.
This move effectively repeals the Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2022, a controversial D.C. measure that had allowed noncitizen residents to vote in local but not federal elections.
Rep. August Pfluger (R-TX), who introduced H.R. 192, emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the vote.
“In Washington, DC, noncitizens including illegal aliens and foreign agents are allowed to vote in local elections,” Pfluger said in a post on X. “Noncitizen voting dilutes the voting power of the citizen voter.”
Eleanor Holmes Norton, D.C.’s nonvoting delegate in the House, argued against the bill, asserting that D.C. residents should have the autonomy to govern their own local affairs without Congressional intervention.
“D.C. laws are matters for the duly elected D.C. Council and mayor, not unaccountable members of Congress who do not represent D.C. residents,” Norton stated.
“The almost 700,000 D.C. residents are worthy and capable of governing their own local affairs.”
Despite Norton’s objections, the bipartisan support for H.R. 192 highlights a shared concern over the integrity of local elections in the nation’s capital.
The passage of the bill signifies a broader legislative effort to address perceived vulnerabilities in the voting system.
The House’s approval of H.R. 192 is part of a larger push by Republicans to address election integrity, particularly in the context of the ongoing illegal immigration crisis.
This includes the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) indicated that the House would consider the SAVE Act “right after” the Memorial Day holiday, underscoring the urgency Republicans place on this issue.
“We’ll get that passed and that will solve that problem on the federal election basis. We’ve got to do that; we have an absolute responsibility,” Johnson said in an interview with Fox News.
While the passage of H.R. 192 in the House marks a significant step, the bill faces steep challenges in the Senate and is unlikely to be signed into law under the current administration.
Both the Senate and the White House are controlled by Democrats, who are generally opposed to measures perceived as restricting voting rights.
However, the legislative efforts by House Republicans serve to highlight their commitment to election integrity, a crucial issue as the nation approaches the 2024 presidential election.
By pushing these bills, Republicans aim to reassure their constituents that they are taking concrete steps to secure the voting process.
