As important as those stories are, Trump is also facing a fight for the nomination as big names in the conservative movement, like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, challenge him for the Republican ticket.
And a new poll is out that could be signaling the winds of change have begun to blow.
A new poll finds that in the 2024 presidential election, Gov. Ron DeSantis performs better against President Biden than Donald Trump.
Biden defeats all of his prospective Republican opponents save DeSantis, who he trails 43% to 44% – far inside the margin of error, according to the DailyMail.com/J.L. Partners poll.
Other polls have produced comparable results, with the Florida governor leading Biden by 1.3 percentage points, according to the most recent RealClearPolitics aggregate.
DeSantis, the former president’s main Republican primary opponent, has made electability a central part of his pitch to GOP primary voters.
“l think that there’s a lot of voters who just aren’t going to vote for [Trump], who don’t like Biden,” DeSantis told “The Brian Kilmeade Show” earlier this month.
“At the end of the day, I think we have a great track record in Florida of reaching voters who had traditionally not voted Republican.”
The poll shows DeSantis has a five-point lead against Biden among independents, winning 43% to 38%.
Some Republican strategists are concerned that Trump’s escalating legal problems — including a 37-count indictment for suspected sensitive document hoarding — and bombastic style would turn off voters in a future election.
Trump’s campaign has dismissed many of those concerns, emphasizing that he now has a 32.7 percentage point lead over his GOP opponents, according to the most recent RealClearPolitics poll.
According to the DailyMail.com/J.L. Partners poll, Trump trails Biden 44% to 46%.
Other competitors are similarly pushed aside by Biden.
Former Vice President Mike Pence is behind Biden with 38% to 41%, while former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie trails with 32% to 39%.
With a little less than a year until the primaries, anything could change.
Stranger things have happened, and we won’t know until the votes are cast.
But this poll should light a fire under President Trump. And if it does, we’re in for a interesting primary, folks.
