Now Homeland Security admitted to this terrifying reality at the border.
According to a Fox News report, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that “more than 85%” of migrants captured at the southern border are being allowed into the United States.
Three people who were in the room say that DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas let the secret slip during a private meeting with border agents on Monday at the busy Eagle Pass crossing in Texas.
In October and November, over 81,000 migrants surrendered in the Del Rio sector, where Eagle Pass is located, seeking a new life in the United States.
According to ABC sources, the border siege has only worsened since then, with a monthly record 302,000 migrants encountered, the vast majority of whom are being waved into the nation.
Those arriving include not only those fleeing poverty, political instability, and gang violence in Central America, but also migrants from China, Turkey, Afghanistan, and other African countries.
The agents asked Mayorkas at the discussion about an interview he gave Fox last week in which he claimed “it would not surprise me at all” if the release numbers were greater than 70%. Mayorkas is facing an impeachment hearing from House Republicans over his handling of the migrant crisis.
According to the sources, agents did not believe the release rate was so low, and Mayorkas later admitted it was currently above 85%.
Once accepted to the United States to pursue their asylum claims, travelers must check in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on a regular basis.
According to the agency’s annual report released last week, it is currently handling 6.2 million persons in the country, a figure that has nearly doubled from 2020, when it was monitoring 3.3 million active cases.
Despite his private revelation, Mayorkas praised the DHS’s efforts to deport illegal aliens later that day at an Eagle Pass press conference.
“In fact, the majority of all Southwest Border migrant encounters throughout this Administration have been removed, returned, or expelled – the majority of them,” Mayorkas said.
“We are doing everything we can, within a broken system, to incentivize noncitizens to use lawful pathways, to impose consequences on those who do not, and to reduce irregular migration.”
According to data from the first two months of the fiscal year, more than 70% of migrants encountered at the southern border were paroled and permitted into the nation.
In October, approximately 237,000 people were intercepted, with roughly 170,000 — 71% — being let into the country.
Similar numbers were encountered in November — approximately 238,000 — with approximately 177,000, or 74%, given entry into the United States.
The data for December has yet to be revealed, but Mayorkas’ words indicate that they will be greater than the previous two months.
During the same Fox interview last week, the DHS secretary said that “well more than a million” migrants are permitted into the U.S. on a yearly basis.
