President Joe Biden bragged about defying the Supreme Court on student loans on Wednesday, and appears to have slipped up verbally in the process.
In June, the Supreme Court ruled that Biden’s $400 billion student loan forgiveness scheme was an unlawful use of the president’s powers.
But, since then, Biden has proceeded with multiple smaller rounds of cancellation.
“I went to the Supreme Court to eliminate student debt out there,” Biden remarked amid cheers during a Bidenomics address in Milwaukee.
“Guess what? The Supreme Court ruled against me, but I still got 136 million people’s debt relieved.”

While the comment raises uncomfortable questions about the separation of powers, it is also wrong, though it is unclear if Biden intentionally misspoke or merely muddled up a few numbers.
The Biden administration has written off around $132 billion in student loan debt for 3.6 million borrowers as of early December.
That means Biden underestimated the number of individuals affected by around 133 million.
But, the numerals “1,” “3,” and “6” can be found in the right figures, so he gets points for remembering that.
“The interest they’re paying on that debt is something that prevents them from buying a home, starting a business, all those things,” Biden added.
“That’s on top of erasing black history and banning books.”
We don’t know why he delivered that line either.
As it stands, only 40 million individuals have student loan debt.
The president would be unable to have 136 million people’s loans forgiven unless he began to focus on other sorts of debt, such as mortgages and auto loans.
Republican critics of Biden are expected to focus on another figure: the roughly 290 million individuals who do not have college loans and are paying for debt forgiveness with their tax dollars.
But Biden doesn’t care. Giving away other people’s money is a Democrat specialty.
